中沢志保「原爆投下決定における『公式解釈』の形成とヘンリー・スティムソン」（「文化女子大学紀要 人文・社会科学研究」第15巻、2007年）では、「現在(正確には1990年代半ば)原爆投下問題を再検討する研究者の間でほぼ合意に達している点」として、
a) 原爆の投下は，日本への上陸作戦を避けるためにも，早期に戦争を終結させるためにも必要ではなかった。
（略）
d) 原爆投下によって回避されたとされる犠牲者の公式解釈での推定数「50万人」あるいは 「百万人」には根拠がない。
等を挙げており、日本への原子爆弾投下 - Wikipediaでも引用されている。
しかし、Debate over the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki - Wikipediaに引用されているとおり、Samuel J. Walkerは
The fundamental issue that has divided scholars over a period of more than four decades is whether the use of the bomb was necessary to achieve victory in the Pacific war on terms satisfactory to the United States.*1
と述べており、これを信じるならば「原爆投下が必要ではなかった」とする見解が90年代半ばの時点で「研究者の間でほぼ合意に達している」とは言えなそうである。
